Business: Real Estate & Property Development
Real Estate and Property Development is an extremely lucrative career that is typically overlooked
by many undergraduates contemplating their occupational plans. Texas's robust economy and growing
population offer attractive opportunities for large scale developers who wish to provide the state
with the housing stock, commercial centers and infrastructure that will be required. The best financial
opportunities are in commercial real estate. However, careers in residential real estate are also
high-paying and have flexible hours; they are a good choice for students who anticipate needing a less
rigid schedule or who may be considering taking time off from work for personal reasons. This is also
a career that rewards individuals interested in community service.
The sociology training for real estate emphasizes demography and human ecology. Human ecology
is the social scientific study of the relationships between human behavior and space. Knowing where
populations are going to expand and contract; and the socioeconomic dynamics of these centers of
expansion and contraction are essential to understanding the future potentials of neighborhoods.
The remaining training is similar to our training for business marketing: understanding social psychology
and the wide variety of groups with whom one will be doing business. Some training in political sociology
is useful to deal with the regulatory environment surrounding real estate.
