Forcing Into Sociology Classes
The Sociology Department is a no-force department. When classes are full, that means they are
full. The only way to enter a full class is if a student already enrolled for that class drops.
This policy is designed to maintain the quality of our undergraduate classes. We use a lot of
innovative approaches in our classes. Overcrowding limits the personal attention that professors
can pay to the needs of individual students and the ability of professors to use creative or discussion
oriented teaching techniques.
The effect of overloading the carrying capacity of a section by adding extra students to a previously
maxed out course is to provide a significant benefit for the small number of students who get forced at
in the cost of worsening educational quality for the students already in the class
Students who face problems as a result of being unable to get into their classes should consult a
sociology advisor. Generally, the solution will be to explore creative alternatives and not to force
students into sections.
