Certificate in Global Sociology

The Global Sociology Certificate Program gives students concentrated educational experience in international sociological perspectives.

All students successfully completing this program will receive a Certificate in Global Sociology during a recognition ceremony at the end of the Spring Semester of their Senior year. The Global Sociology Certificate is open to all sociology majors. Students majoring in International Studies are also eligible if they are taking a minor in sociology.

In order to receive the certificate all normal requirements for the sociology major must be met. In addition, students must complete the requirements listed below. Note: Transfer courses, independent studies and credit by exam cannot substitute for the required courses unless approved by the Undergraduate Advisor for certificate purposes.

Requirements

A. Take Sociology 206 The World Community - Introduction to Global Sociology.

B. Take three additional courses from the following list:

Soci 207 Introduction to Gender and Society
Soci 312 Population and Society
Soci 313 Sociology of the Military
Soci 322 Industrial Sociology
Soci 324 Social Change
Soci 325 International Business Behavior
Soci 328 Environmental Sociology
Soci 329 Pacific Rim Business Behavior
Soci 330 Sociology of Nutrition
Soci 340 Soviet Society
Soci 350 Islamic Societies
Soci 370 International Migration
Soci 423 Internationalization and Social Change
Soci 489 When content is appropriate

C. International Experience: Each student must ordinarily complete one semester abroad, either through one of TAMU's regular programs (such as the Santa Chiara, Italy, program) or another approved study abroad program, international internship, or similar academic experience in another country. Exceptions for approved reasons, will be considered by the undergraduate advisor, with appropriate substitute work or experience. Course credit from courses taken during study abroad may sometimes count toward the three required courses in B (above), with the approval of the undergraduate advisor.

D. Language: A minimum of two years (four courses) at the college level of a non-English modern language is required, normally taken prior to the study abroad or other international experience. The language should be appropriate to the student's overall program.

E. Earn a cumulative GPR of 3.0 or higher in courses counting toward the certificate.

Certificate in Sociology of Race & Ethnicity

The Sociology of Race and Ethnicity Certificate gives students 12 hours of intensive training in a broad range of issues related to diversity and ethnic dynamics.

This program is open only to students who are majoring in sociology.

Students completing this program will receive a special Certificate in Sociology of Race and Ethnicity during a recognition ceremony at the end of the Spring Semester of their Senior year.

In order to receive the certificate all normal requirements for the sociology major must be met. In addition, students must complete the requirements listed below. Requirements

A. Take Sociology 317 Minority Groups.

B. Take three additional courses from the following list:

Soci 323 Sociology of Black Americans
Soci 370 Sociology of Migration
Soci 403 Sociology of Mexican Americans
Soci 419 Social Class in Contemporary Society

C. Earn a cumulative GPR of 3.0 or higher in courses counting toward the certificate.

Certificate in Sociology of Gender

The Sociology of Gender Certificate Program prepares students for graduate studies in gender-related issues or for work in which gender issues are important. This course of study will also help the student to be a knowledgeable and responsible citizen in a society which has become increasingly committed to establishing gender equality.

All students completing this program will receive a special Certificate in Sociology of Gender during a recognition ceremony at the end of the Spring Semester of their Senior year. Students could also easily combine this certificate with a minor in Women's Studies. The Sociology of Gender Certificate is open to all sociology majors.
